How We Work

How We Work

We do one thing: manage portfolios. We believe that focus, and not selling products we don't believe in, lets us deliver better investment management and better fiduciary advice.

What we do

  • Discretionary portfolio management across four strategies (see Our Strategies)
  • Portfolio construction built around each family's income needs, time horizon, and tolerance for risk
  • Consolidation and review of existing accounts, including IRAs, trusts, and taxable accounts
  • Regular written commentary, including our Base Camp market briefs and quarterly letters to clients

What we don't do

We don't sell life insurance, annuities, or commission products. We don't receive payments from fund companies. Our only compensation is the fee our clients pay us.

How we're paid

  • Management fee: 0.50% per year of assets under management.
  • Performance fee: 25% of gains above a high-water mark, for eligible clients in specified strategies. A high-water mark means we earn a performance fee only on new gains, never on recovering earlier losses.

Where your money is held

Client assets are held in your name at Interactive Brokers, an independent custodian. Kodiak can manage your investments but cannot withdraw your money.

Our process

  1. Introductory conversation. We learn what you have, what it's for, and what has frustrated you before.
  2. Risk and goals review. You complete our risk tolerance assessment, and we review your current holdings.
  3. Proposal. We recommend a strategy or combination, and explain fees and risks in plain language.
  4. Onboarding. Accounts are opened or transferred at the custodian.
  5. Ongoing management. We manage the portfolio, meet with you quarterly, and send a written letter each quarter.
